Led by brothers Will and Sam Skarstad, the quartet that is Yellow Eyes is helping bring weight and authenticity to the Brooklyn black metal scene one moody, violent album at a time. Their latest release Immersion Trench Reverie was inspired and created by the brothers’ trip to Siberia. Field recordings of pent up dogs, angelic voices, and atmospheric sounds are used to weave together songs that revel in both explosiveness and melancholy. Pounding drums are brought to the forefront, breaking through the din of strings, in a way that challenges a black metal norm while giving the production an almost old school feel. Yellow Eyes are the real deal and what they’ve created is some of the best modern black metal America has to offer.
