Rather than look to the cosmos for material, Robin Staps’ The Ocean grounds soaring, atmospheric strings created by members of the Berlin Philharmonic in pummeling grit and Earth-bound struggle. This year, the band will be performing “Precambrian (Proterozoic)”. Strap wrote the album alone, recruiting 26 musicians to bring the project to life—among them, genre legends Caleb Scofield (Cave In), Nate Newton (Converge) and Dwid Hellion (Integrity). As a record, Precambrian begins in a state of rabid madness before diving deeper into a dark, atmospheric underworld that, while less aggressive, never relents in intensity. The set promises to be a journey not to be missed.
