Lyon, France’s Celeste pissed-off brand of nihilistic hardcore sounds at times a lot like black metal, but the band is quick to distance themselves from the label. Behind the walls of noise, driving, layered guitars and thick, bleeding screams, lyrical fits of optimism and hope give songs about misogyny, pedophilia, misanthropy and failure an extra depth in juxtaposition. Elements of screamo’s influence can be heard in the sometimes Orchid-like moments of chaos. But at their heart, Celeste is a punk band. One that continues to create new ways of making dark music darker and heavy music heavier. This is deceivingly suffocating stuff. You will leave their show feeling drained and empty, but glad for the experience.
