Montreal, Quebec’s Big | Brave serve as a testament to the power and sound that can be wrung from three human beings, two guitars and one drum kit. Filthy, grunge-textured droning and patient pounding build songs that are rhythmic and heavy without a need for a bass. A delicate voice explodes with the power of a banshee’s death howl. It’s tempting to talk of experimental metal and post-rock when describing Big | Brave but any genre-talk fails to prepare you for the desert-at-night sound that comes to life on their records and fails that much more to prepare you for the intensity of their live show. Let’s just say that if Merzbow, Bleach-era Nirvana, and Cat Power had a baby in the ashen Hell of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, that baby might be named Big | Brave.
