While every release from the band has garnered acclaim from both critics and audiences, with Mirror Reaper—a single 83 min track—Bell Witch have taken their brand of massive funeral doom to new heights. Started as a concept record exploring the dichotomy of ‘As Above, So Below’, the record quickly became a very serious, extremely powerful tribute to former drummer / vocalist Adrian Guerra who passed away unexpectedly during the album’s creation.
Mirror Reaper, like the band’s previous records, is popping up all over end of year lists, including Rolling Stone’s. The ghost stories that inspire much of Bell Witch’s material are set against a background of mournful ambiance before slowly, very slowly, growing into a colossal downpour of post-apocalyptic doom. All things considered, Bell Witch is certainly one of the heaviest, most achingly beautiful bands playing music today.
